DESCRIPTION
My favorite place in the world is located under mountains on the edge of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park. My preferred place is not my favorite place. Growing up in an area with so much silence, I found myself battling against it. I also found myself increasingly uncomfortable the more I was removed from people. Auditory and visual stimulation relaxed me. However, my obsessions did come from these remote and quiet places I grew up in. I become obsessed with light and how it hits the mountain faces. The way the light turned the snow-covered peaks pink in the winter fascinated me. During my time in New York I found myself loving similar things. The way the sun hit the facades and windows, throwing light around like I had never seen. The wave of comfort felt when transitioning from urban density into an open park or courtyard. This preferred place located in Washington Square Arch pieces together my obsessions, “remade, recombined: altered memories” (Daniel Solomon, 31).
The polycarbonate walls and the glass floor and ceiling work together to create the feeling of floating. The chair and table are also both translucent to promote this floating feeling. The translucent walls slide open to reveal the view as well as access to the balcony that wraps around the whole room. The translucent and transparent materials paired with this pink steel mimic the color and glow of early morning light hitting snow in the mountains. The pink steel now will always either reflect against the glass or glow through the polycarbonate.
